Cats originate from the desert. Originally, they obtained most of their fluids from prey rather than by drinking, and this mechanism has remained. A cat that primarily eats dry food receives much less water than its body is designed to receive.
Running Water vs. Bowl
In nature, still water can be contaminated. Running water is a sign of freshness. Many cats react precisely to this: they are drawn to an open tap and ignore the bowl next to it.
A fountain addresses this exactly: constant movement, filtration, and uniform temperature. For some cats, this significantly increases their water intake, while for others it makes no difference. It's worth trying to see.
Where to Place It
- Away from food. Cats tend to avoid water that is next to their food bowl.
- Away from the litter box. A room's distance, not a meter's.
- Not in a confined corner. A cat wants to see the room while drinking.
- More than one spot. In a multi-cat household, multiple sources prevent territorial disputes.
Maintenance You Can't Skip
A fountain contains water in motion at room temperature, which means a convenient environment for bacteria if not cared for. Rinse the reservoir weekly and change the filter according to manufacturer instructions. A neglected fountain is worse than a clean bowl.
When to Consult a Vet
A sudden change in drinking habits, either much more or much less, is a sign that should be checked and not ignored. This is especially true for older cats.
